Let's begin with the Wisconsin Pedestrian Policy Plan:
Objective 5.0: Encouragement
Working in partnership with local governments and other
interested stakeholders, WisDOT will encourage more trips that are
pedestrian by promoting the acceptance and usefulness of walking and through
the promotion of pedestrian safety efforts.
Action 5.1 To the extent practical, WisDOT will share
its expertise with the locals
Action 5.2 WisDOT will promote walking as part of a
multimodal transportation system
Action 5.3 WisDOT reaffirms efforts to address
pedestrians with special needs

In Wisconsin, AARP initiated a pilot program called
AARP-Wisconsin’s Active for Life™, a multi-year effort to encourage
people 50+ of all fitness levels to include more physical activity in
their everyday routines. The project wrapped up in August 2004. It was
one of only two pilot programs nationally. For information, visit:

NHTSA and the Partnership for Prevention published
an excellent tool to help communities develop strategies that promote
physical activity for older adults. The 16-page document is called
Creating Communities for Active Living: A Guide to Developing a
Strategic Plan to Increase Walking and Biking by Older Adults in Your
Community. To view or download a copy of the PDF, go to:
