What Wisconsin Communities do to Promote Walking:The Manitowoc County Safe Communities Coalition recently initiated a pedestrian safety project to supply reflective sashes to county residents who walk during dawn, dusk, or dark. For the past three years the Coalition for a Walkable Marshfield - a group of city officials and residents - has organized an annual Pedestrian Safety Week in May to raise awareness about pedestrian issues. During Pedestrian Safety Week, residents are encouraged to walk to school or work, and organizers have placed signs throughout the city urging motorists to give the crosswalks back to pedestrians. In 2003, the group held a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for future educational efforts. A new Whitefish Bay pedestrian advocacy group, Stop Traffic for Our Pedestrians (STOP), convinced the Village Board to put up "yield to pedestrian" signs at five crosswalks along Silver Spring Drive. Ozaukee County Health Department “Walk for the Health of It” walking maps present walking courses in four communities. Coming soon: Neighborhood Pace Cars, Pedestrian Flags, Slow Down Signs, Take the Stairs, Walking in Winter, and more!
