"One reason for American's sedentary lifestyle is that walking and cycling have been replaced by automobile travel for all but the shortest distances."
— Journal of the American Medical Association, October 27, 1999

Wisconsin Department of Health & Family Services (DHFS) Health Plan

DHFS published a state health plan called Healthiest Wisconsin 2010: A Partnership Plan to Improve the Health of the Public. To view or download this plan (executive summary or full plan), go to: http://dhfs.wisconsin.gov/Health/StateHealthPlan/index.htm

DHFS sponsors a number of chronic disease workgroups that seek to improve public health. Nutrition and physical activity are “cross-cutting” issues which may prevent or mitigate many forms of chronic disease.

Obesity Trends

During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. In 1985 only a few states were participating in CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and providing obesity data. In 1991, four states were reporting obesity prevalence rates of 15–19 percent and no states reported rates at or above 20 percent. In 2002, 18 states have obesity prevalence rates of 15–19 percent; 29 states have rates of 20–24 percent; and 3 states have rates over 25 percent.

A Power Point Presentation that depicts the prevalence of obesity is available on this Obesity Trends webpage from the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
